Internet friends

Today's post is a little different than usually. I wanted to talk about some of my friends that I've found through the internet. And I can even say that one of them is one of my best friends even today.
I met him almost 10 years ago in one chat place. We started talking and found out that we have a lot in common. He is a very interesting guy and talking to him is never boring. He has a great sense of humour and is a great cook :) He lives in Estonia so yes, we have met ;)
Another friend that I met through the internet has also a great sense of humour (I guess I'm drawn to that! LOL) but I'm sad to say we don't talk as much as we did when we first met. We both lead busy lifestyles but still write on occasion. We have also met a couple of times, he lives in the UK and he came to visit me (twice) and we also had a holiday together with my hubby and his girlfriend in Italy years ago. Miss him a lot sometimes.

But this post is dedicated to Debbie from The Wug's Backyard who I met about a year and a half ago (if I remember correctly :D). She is always so supportive and funny and her blog is an excellent reading material! It will have you smiling for hours! :) She is also really good at crocheting and I have the privilege to own two of her scarves (I ordered one but she also sent me another pretty scarf for free :D) and one cute flower pin :)

The reason why I am writing about this is because I'm so happy that I got a gift from her with Sunflower seeds :)

She also included a cute little thank you card :)

Might not seem much to most of you but it's the little things that make me happy and when you think about it: they are seeds now but wait until the grow and get BIG :D There will be so much to be happy about then!
We were talking about the seeds last year and I was asking if they still have those seeds in the shop and that I would like to order one pack. But they were all out. And now this spring her hubby remembered that I was interested in the seeds and went and bought me a pack and then Debbie sent it to me from the other side of the planet and didn't even ask me for money... I know it didn't cost a lot of money but still, these kinds of simple gestures are so nice and heartwarming :) So I just wanted to say thank you, Debbie, for being my friend and my seed supplier! :))

Ahhh, I thought the winter would never end and yet here it is, the beautiful spring! :))) I'm going to show you some pictures I took while I was visiting my mum last week. I had such great time there and the weather was perfect.

Well, this was a difficult one. Why? Well because March in Estonia is still winter but everybody is so sick of it and wants to see the flowers and green grass already. But the flowers will start to come in April and not before :( Okay... there are spring snowflakes that come out in March but for some reason I couldn't find any pics of them :S Must fix this problem this year! :P So as I was looking through my pics from previous years I discovered this photo of tulips that I had taken and that was bright and colourful and just lovely for a March calendar. Oh and different too from what I've previously posted. Repeat after me: different is good! ;)

This photo was taken by using the technique "painting with light". It simply means that during the long exposure I used different coloured torches to illuminate both the flowers and make the spiral light you see on the right side.

Glorious light - Part 1

Last Friday I saw the most amazing sunset, the sun was HUGE and everything was orange-pink. I guess the sun seemed so big because of the cold but I don't know exactly what was the cause of it. So on Sunday I went to photograph swans and that magnificent sunset by the sea...which is obviously frozen. To stay warm the swans, I guess about 200-300 of them, keep swimming in one small area to leave the water open. People come to see and photograph them and leave them some food.

Thankfully most of the people now know that it isn't good to feed them white bread and they had scattered some sort of wheat products over the ice. The swans loved it.

The light was really glorious and I was just happy snapping away pics (took 422 pics total in that one hour :P). Don't worry, I made a strict cut and you will only see 47 of them ;) Will post the rest of them tomorrow as it would be too much for one post LOL

Saw this swan at the very last minute so I wasn't able to catch decent shots.

The water droplets looked especially good in this light :)

Frozen :S It was around -20C that day

It's cold!

I've spent too much time behind my computer lately and was getting so bored of it! So I was really happy when hubby invited me to a little trip to Riga (Latvia) on Friday. It was a quick business trip and we decided to spend the rest of the weekend with my mom in the country. Actually it's a pretty little town but it feels like being in the country.
I'll start from the beginning. This is what the weather looked like when we were driving to Riga.

I couldn't tell the difference between the ground and the sky.

Luckily the clouds cleared and we got to enjoy a sunny weekend. It has gotten really cold though, about -15C on Saturday and Sunday, -19C on Monday. Normally I hate going out in really cold temperatures like -20 or more but this time I finally realised that it's not cold when you have the right clothes! Took me long enough to understand it! LOL Nice long and thick pantyhose under the jeans did the trick ;)

Now, some of you might remember this cute dog.

She is my mom's dog Scrappy. REALLY playful and cute doggy! :D It doesn't matter what the temperature is outside, she still wants to go out and play in the snow!

Actually I think out of all the seasons she loves winter the most. She is originally from Spain so I guess this is exotic for her ;)

There's a river that runs next to my mom's house and because of the cold it was almost completely frozen.

Since Scrappy loves catching snow and ice so much I decided to do a photoshoot about her and try to capture her cheerful nature. Can you tell how much she loves this? :D

She really can go on and on and probably would NEVER get tired! :D Us humans are the ones that get bored easily. Maybe we should learn to be more childlike? :)

After the play we headed back home to fill our bellies. My mom's hubby is a GREAT cook and here are pics of the wonderful meals we had at their place. :P

We had been driving around in the countryside during the weekend and had seen many foxes and roe deer but never really got an opportunity to get close. Why you ask? Well, I guess I somewhat explained it earlier that I've always thought that going out to photograph wildlife in winter would be too cold. So I haven't invested in clothes that would camouflage me in winter time and I had a bright red ski jacket on!! :D Laugh all you want, I'm laughing at myself too ;) Nature photographer! LOL

However I know that roe deer can let you come close even if you are in red :) The key is to walk quickly but quietly to get closer and stop whenever they lift their head and look around. When they see you walking it's all over. I didn't get really close but just decent enough to snap some pics.

This one was standing on a hay ball, trying to brake it with it's front feet.

Wheee! :D

Okay, so we still have LOTS of snow.

But look what hubby got me for Valentine's Day - Spring!! :D

Chocolate mousse

I wanted to tell (and show) you about some of the delicious desserts I've been eating/making lately :)

I guess it all started with this cake photo that I uploaded to my Etsy shop the other day.

I photographed this in an italian restaurant. I was hired to design their website and photograph the interior of the place. That also included photographing food. :) Now it may sound simple but taking good photos of food is not easy at all. For this picture I used a gold reflector to bounce back the light from the window. It worked great for this cake and gave it a nice golden glow. I also used shallow depth of field which means that only the important part of the image is sharp and the rest is out of focus. I was enjoying and concentrating on my work so much that only after I had gone home I realised I didn't even taste the cake!! I did taste some of their main dishes but totally forgot about the cake. This doesn't happen often to me as I am a sweet tooth! LOL

Moving on. The other day I saw on TV how one cook had made chocolate mousse and decided to give it a go myself :P What do you think? Did I succeed?

It sure tasted good! :D
Here's a recipe if you want to try as well. It's really easy.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Chocolate mousse

120g of chocolate
4 eggs
4 tbs of liquor

Melt the chocolate and add 4 tbs of liquor (you can also add coffee). Stir in the egg yolks. Whip the egg whites in a medium bowl until they are foamy and beginning to hold a shape. You can add a little bit of salt to speed up the process. Now gently fold in the egg whites to the chocolate mixture. Be careful not to overdo it. Spoon the mousse into individual serving bowls and refrigerate for at least 8 hours.

I couldn't wait for 8 hours of course so I tried mine after about 2. :)

Something I also ate last week was a mandarin cake :P One of our friends had a birthday and we got him this amazing cake. Don't know exactly what was in it but it sure tasted good! :)

Spent the weekend in the country again :) No wild animals this time but lots and lots of cute little birdies!!! I'm gonna start off with this cutie - long-tailed tit. They are so much fun to watch with their cute little faces and loooong tails :D

In the middle of photographing them I saw some kind of a falcon up in the sky and had to quickly decide who I'm gonna shoot LOL Made the right call and stuck with my little ones ;) I mean, is there anything cuter than long-tailed tits? :) I wish one would sit on my shoulder all the time!!

How small can a bird's beak really be?? How can she eat with that?! LOL

This is also a small bird - jenny wren. I haven't seen one in my garden before. Loved that funny tail and the pretty song she sang :) Those poses are great too! :D

Now some of you know already that I have two ginkgo bilobas growing in my garden! :) I have been really obsessed with them lately and am so happy they love living in my garden! :) Ginkgos, also known as Maidenhair trees, are the oldest trees alive, living fossils you could say. You can read all about them from Wikipedia.

Hubby's 40th Birthday party!

So my hubby is turning 40 on the 1st of September but we already decided to have a party on the 20th of August. It's a national holiday too so we were hoping that a lot of people can come. And they did!! About 50 people showed up! :D Now let me show you the place where we had the party - it's simply AMAZING! But bare with me, this is a long blog post with lots of pretty pics ;)

We found this place on the internet in the beginning of summer and booked it immediately. It's located in the centre of Estonia right beside a big lake and was built a few years ago.

There are also 2 other houses besides the main house where people can sleep and every house has a sauna :P

The guests are arriving, time to open up the champagne :P

That trampoline was great! I had fun on it the next day with my sisters :D

We were SO lucky with the weather because it had been raining before and it did the next day but not on THE day :)) Of course I paid the weather guy a lot too LOL

We had rented two boats for the evening, one was a quiet and slow boat and the other one was going tooo fast for me :S I didn't go on it but seeing it speed away with the people I love on it was a bit hmmm....

Meanwhile the ones that stayed behind were enjoying life to the fullest too :) This swing was an amazing place to be, I didn't want to leave! Imagine a quiet summers evening, a million dollar view, good company and a swing where you could lie down, ahhhhh!

They seemed to be organized LOL probably having a meeting of some sort :)

And then the evening came and they turned on the pool lights!!! I have to say amazing for the third time already :D

Still pretty the very next morning, maybe even prettier if that's even possible :)

She is cute anyway but she was tooo cute that morning, still sleepy and warm :)

We found an interesting rock by the lake.

When everyone left I had a look at the suite, we didn't use it but I wanted to see it and I loved the bathroom.

I seriously don't remember the last time when I was this happy and had such a good time!!! :)))

Two cute fox kits!

Finally! I met 2 fox kits yesterday evening playing on a field and had a chance to photograph them. I was sure I would get closer than I did but they have grown so much after the last time I saw them and I guess their mom has taught them well to avoid humans. I have to try harder next time!
Oh and there was a big elk in the bushes too, didn't see him but could hear he was big when he ran away :)
There are so many hares around and one was thinking she could hide from me LOL

This is me watering the plants :D But isn't it beautiful?!

Thanks for looking! I will be away for a week or more now, am going to Norway tomorrow :) But hopefully will get a chance to log on every once and a while.

Who I met in the forest today

A wide variety of animals and birds in the forest today :)
Will list who I saw:

A couple of roe deer
A buzzard who was acting strangely and sitting on smaller trees, almost near the ground, was probably waiting for hare and little birds
2 hares (wild rabbit), you can see the other one in the pic, came really close and didn't mind me at all :)
A cute little pine marten
A huge variety of birds like robins and thrush and so on
Two cranes on a field having breakfast ;)
A squirrel

These are my pretty lilies that I got from a friend last year, the colour is sooo wonderful! :)

The fox family

You all know how much I love foxes, imagine how thrilled I was to see so many of them during my holiday last week. And the best news is that there is a fox den somewhere not far from my house, I haven't found it yet but my mom saw two fox kits one evening and I saw one the next morning. They are so incredibly cute! Quite small still.

So this is the first fox I met one evening hunting for food :)

And this is the mom. She was so occupied with the hunt and when she appeared to the field she already had about 4 mice in her mouth :D But then dropped them all and caught another one. And then quickly hurried to her kiddies with 5 mice in her mouth! :)

This is a closeup of the mice! :D Against the light so not good quality. And would you look at those tits! HAHAHA

Very early next morning I went to look for little foxes and I managed to find their trail. It was another sunny day but the trail was in a dark forest, not good conditions for photography. I was already giving up of finding the den when suddenly I saw one fluffy little fellow hopping towards me on that very trail! :D He saw me just as I saw him which was a pity. We stared at each other for 10 seconds and then he turned and ran back the way he came. It was my first encounter with a fox kit and I knew that they were cute but I didn't think they could be this cute! :D Looking forward to meeting them again!

This is another handsome fellow, I think this could be the dad but I'm not 100% sure. He was a bit lazy :) Sat in the middle of the field for a long time and was probably waiting for the mice to jump into his mouth ;)

Last weekends trip with hubby

Trips that are not planned are the greatest! :D I came up with this idea to visit the north east side of Estonia the day before. We started driving on Saturday morning and a few hours later arrived at a place which is known as the most lake filled area in Estonia :) You get the point ;) We ended up hiking for 3 hours and walked about 12km (7,5miles). The weather was nice, a bit windy though.

This is a tiny plant (less than half an inch tall) that grows only in wet areas and eats flies and mosquitos. You can see the mosquito in the next pic ;)

Light was not good for photography but took the pics anyway to show you where we went ;)

That's a man made hill in the background, we don't have big hills or mountains in Estonia.

We stayed the night at a beautiful manor. The room was lovely and we enjoyed our dinner at the restaurant! :)

There were lots and lots of birds in the park :) This is a fieldfare.

A very smart and old cat! She came to the manor some 5 years ago and never left. I don't blame her, they feed and look after her and she gets to live like a queen sleeping all day at the comfy chairs :D She didn't even open her eyes when I petted her haha
The manor is located on top of the highest cliff around here, sadly we didn't see the cliff this time because on that area the trees have taken over...

And to end the story - not the manor cat but this cat had beautiful eyes :)

Time in the country to celebrate my birthday :)

Last Saturday was my B-day and we went to celebrate it with my family to our summer home. The weather was fabulous, sunny & warm. We had a BBQ and ate some other delicious foods at the sauna terrace :)

Pay attention to the dog under the chair ;) Best seat in the house :D

There are so many hares (wild rabbits) about this year. So this is my birthday present from the animal kingdom this year :D

Remember my last post where I showed you the pics of the trees we had cut down? Well this is what it looks now - new stones and flowers for the flower bed too.

The lapwing is such a beautiful bird when viewed closer than usual.

We have lots of rosefinches in our garden. Or maybe it's just that one pair that keeps singing all the time :)

Had to wash the car, looks nice now :P And the flowers are growing so quickly! Will show you lots of flower pics soon too!

Winter damage in the country

We had a looong and snowy winter this year, I think the max amount of snow at some point was 70cm (27 inches) so I guess it's only natural that when we arrived at our summer home last weekend we found a lot of broken trees.

Some of these lilacs are over 100 years old.

You can see how the trees have been bended by the huge amounts of heavy snow. So we decided to cut them down entirely.

I know it doesn't look good now but it will after the leaves come, the flowers start to bloom and after we reorganise the flower pads.

Some flowers are already blooming :)

This is not a UFO landing site LOL but these are my last years lilies that I got from a friend, they are gonna be soo pretty - red and yellow. And now I planted a new and hopefully a gorgeous orange Crocosmia to the middle :)

Close enough

I was driving in the southern of Estonia one evening when I saw this roe deer come into a pasture. I stopped the car next to a forest after the field and walked back. The deer was slowly crossing a pasture with hay balls on it towards a wheat field. You never know with wild animals how they react to you and how good they can sense or smell you so I kept close to the edge of the pasture to blur my shape among the trees. The deer soon stepped into the wheat field and disappeared from view since the wheat was so tall. I could only see him when he lifted his head. I ran quickly but quietly to the other side of the pasture and stood by the wheat. Humans have a much larger footprint than deer so I hesitated to step into the wheat field at first, don't want to ruin other people's food source. The deer was totally oblivious to me so I thought that I wouldn't get a better opportunity to get closer and coughed a few times. He must have heard me but paid no attention at all. So I stepped into the wheat field and started walking slowly towards him.

When he lifted his head I stopped ( no matter what strange position I could have been in) and continued walking again when he feasted on the wheat. I was clearly visible in the yellow wheat but I noticed he was a young last year's calf so I was in luck - he didn't fear me. The wind was in a perfect direction and the sun was just ideally between soft clouds. There were so many horseflys that we both had a struggle getting them off.
At the end I was standing approx 10 meters from him when he finally decided that it's close enough :) I only noticed it's a he afterwards when I was looking at the pics from the camera, there were small dark circles were his horns will soon start to grow. If he was this cute as a youngster then I can't imagine what a handsome guy he will be next year! :)

Something totally different for you this time. I want to introduce you to my friend who is partly to blame why I am so in to earrings now. She is a very talented artist, her paintings are amazing and she also makes jewelry. She is a very fun person to be with but I guess you will figure that out from this interview :)

Who are you and what do you do?
I'm Silja Erg, a biology student at the moment. I love painting, drawing and doing crafts. My two most recent favorite crafts are making bead jewelry and needle felting.

Where do you live?
I live in South Estonia.

What do you like?
I like when I wake up really early on holidays, so I can have a nice long day ahead of me. It doesn't happen too often though. I like learning new stuff.I like practical things, but I guess there are exceptions.
Also I like rock music, carrot juice and painting. Sounds like a party to me!

What don't you like?
When people pretend they don't understand something in sake of "not going there".
When people assume you can't take the truth or patronize you.

How big is your family?
There is six of us.

Tell me the most exciting thing you did this summer.
It had to be the bungee jump. I wasn't scared then but now when I look at someone jumping on Youtube, I get this hollow feeling in my stomach. It's weird to step on air from 80m high crane. It's just weird. And the next most exciting thing followed in a couple of hours - I saw Guano Apes performing live!

If you could hold one charity event, for what would it be?
Probably something local, not for the world peace or anything like that.
I hate to see news about people mistreating animals. Maybe organize an event where we beat up everyone who has tortured animals? Yeah...that would totally be in the spirit of charity...
I guess we could go a more humane path and make a fund-raiser. And use the collected funds for bribing the government so they would make better animal protection laws?
I don't have the cutest ideas I guess :P

Who's your favourite animal? Why?
It used to be foxes, because they are just awesome. But now it's cats, more specifically - our cats. Well, now it's just a cat, not cats. Because they make me laugh the most. They are very sneaky and they walk sideways sometimes. And they break your favorite jewelry piece and it all still looks cute.

What haven't you done yet but would like to do?
Go to school and be attending and devoted the whole day. Also it would be cool to learn to drive or ride a horse. Or at least become the president of the universe. I don't know, something from these four would be just fine.
Where do you find your ideas and inspiration?
For jewelry - I get 99% of the ideas while shopping for supplies. For other things like drawing and needle felting the ideas come from most random places and things and events. And when I am stuck somewhere like at a lecture or bus station I sketch stuff I saw or heard that day. Later when I want to paint something, I look through those papers to think back.

Would you prefer to live in the country or in the city?
I haven't lived in the city yet, but Prague for example seems pretty sweet.
I guess living in a small town is nice. There is public transport, services and shops near by but also air to breathe.

Do you have an addiction? I mean like collecting/making jewelry or smth?
Yes, I had an addiction to shopping for jewelry supplies :D I've been clean for 4 months.....Haha. But I have a feeling it will pick up again in the autumn. Oh well... And I just cleared a wall for hanging earrings. So I guess I haven't quit making new ones. It's kind of a useful addiction though, don't you think? :)

What would you never do?
Wouldn't start spilling secrets when I get angry at someone. It would be punishing someone with making others think you are an a**. Clever?

Is there something you couldn't live without?
I guess not. Or maybe ear plugs. And I love my Internetz! :)
I mean, I could live without my gadgets and all but it would be such a drag.

Wild animals on every corner

Yesterday evening was a real treat. I saw 6 roe deer in 2 hours!
It had been a boring rainy day and at 8 in the evening it finally cleared so I headed to the woods. Immediately when I arrived to my favorite paddock there were 2 roe deer there, one male. As it is the time to mate right now the male was interested in the female who had disappeared to the forest so he followed her. After they had left I started crossing the field. Approximately in the middle of the field I turned around and saw 2 more coming to the field - a mother and a baby. I walked slowly towards them. It was dusk already so I set the ISO rating a bit higher but since my camera is really old already I knew I couldn't get a good pic. But I tried, they finally ran away and I was left with blurry images of jumping deer :S
I continued crossing the paddock, went through the wet woods and arrived at the big field. The fog was starting to form and there were some really nice dark clouds with white clouds in between. I stood there a bit and saw a fifth roe deer come to the field far far away. Took some snapshots of the clouds and fog and was already thinking of returning home when I saw the 6th deer come to the field not far away. It was really dark now already so no pics anymore without a tripod.
The road back home was through a dark forest.... brrrrr.

Visiting a friend

Visited a family friend the other day. They are artists and make lots of interesting things from leather. You can find a website with their work on it here <-- 100% made by me :P. They also have many animals - a boa, 2 dogs, 2 ponies, 3 or 4 parrots and the newest additions are 3 sheep. All the flowers were blooming so the garden looked really beautiful. Enjoy! Since there were so many images I made them smaller but please click on them to see bigger, it makes a difference.

This knife is very old and used for leatherwork.

This is my mom's partner's dog Scrappy. You've seen her in couple of pics before if you were paying attention ;) She's the sweetest dog ever and we seem to have a special bond. She is a rescued dog from Spain.

Jumping over the hay to fetch the stick ;) Love those flappy ears, will try to make a better photo next time.

Do you like our new terrace?

Recently we had a terrace upgrade and we all love the new one a lot. The old one was decomposing and small. So we set some big plans and made a 60 m2 terrace :D It still needs some ropes and other smaller things but it's ready to use.

Even birds love our terrace :) The spotted flycatcher moved in as soon as it had finished!
