Two cute fox kits!

Finally! I met 2 fox kits yesterday evening playing on a field and had a chance to photograph them. I was sure I would get closer than I did but they have grown so much after the last time I saw them and I guess their mom has taught them well to avoid humans. I have to try harder next time!
Oh and there was a big elk in the bushes too, didn't see him but could hear he was big when he ran away :)
There are so many hares around and one was thinking she could hide from me LOL

Thanks for looking! I will be away for a week or more now, am going to Norway tomorrow :) But hopefully will get a chance to log on every once and a while.

The fox family

You all know how much I love foxes, imagine how thrilled I was to see so many of them during my holiday last week. And the best news is that there is a fox den somewhere not far from my house, I haven't found it yet but my mom saw two fox kits one evening and I saw one the next morning. They are so incredibly cute! Quite small still.

So this is the first fox I met one evening hunting for food :)

And this is the mom. She was so occupied with the hunt and when she appeared to the field she already had about 4 mice in her mouth :D But then dropped them all and caught another one. And then quickly hurried to her kiddies with 5 mice in her mouth! :)

Very early next morning I went to look for little foxes and I managed to find their trail. It was another sunny day but the trail was in a dark forest, not good conditions for photography. I was already giving up of finding the den when suddenly I saw one fluffy little fellow hopping towards me on that very trail! :D He saw me just as I saw him which was a pity. We stared at each other for 10 seconds and then he turned and ran back the way he came. It was my first encounter with a fox kit and I knew that they were cute but I didn't think they could be this cute! :D Looking forward to meeting them again!

This is another handsome fellow, I think this could be the dad but I'm not 100% sure. He was a bit lazy :) Sat in the middle of the field for a long time and was probably waiting for the mice to jump into his mouth ;)

The fox was once again coming to the field behind our house but this time I had my camera ;) He came again to about 10 meters. He saw me as I was just standing but the sun was shining in his eyes and he was more interested in listening the mice than figuring me out. I moved closer every time he wasn't looking. The light was really bad :( and there were lots of straws in the way. He didn't even think it was weird when I crouched down at one point...strange fella :)

After a while I got too brave and let him see myself stepping closer. That was it for our nice meeting and he disappeared into the woods.

Hi and sorry for my long absence! But I think you will find the following worth the wait! :)
So we headed to our summer home again on the 1st of May. For those of you who don't know already every year at this time we take my grandparents there for 6 months and bring them back for the winter. We all look forward to this time every spring. Saaremaa is a place for us to relax and enjoy the nature. I haven't had the option to properly photograph wildlife this year so I was extremely eager to meet my roe deer, foxes and other wonderful animals again. I try to take advantage of the fact that the animals know the place is empty and wonder to our garden. After a couple of days they are a little bit more aware that we are back. A couple of years ago we had just arrived to Saaremaa and like a half an hour after that I just went to our veggie field which is some 3o meters from the house. I wasn't even there yet when I saw a fox coming my way. My camera was in the house....try not to make that mistake again ;) The fox didn't see me at all, he came to about 10 meters from me. I didn't know what else to do than crouch down and just observe. He was a real beauty! They often come to the fields behind our house to hunt for dinner. After some 5-10 minutes he heard the door slam from our house, probably my grandpa, and he was off. After that I asked people if they could see me because the fox hadn't :D LOL

Anyway, I went to the woods on Friday evening but didn't see anybody.....only heard the roe deer. I decided that okay if I wont see anyone today then I'm sure as hell going to see and get a really good pic tomorrow! I was only off by one day as it turned out, got my really good pics on Sunday evening. Look for a post called Mr. Elk coming soon.

Summer morning filled with foxes

This is an excellent story about a fox that I met last summer.
It promised to be a sunny warm summer day so I headed out early to the sea to find my foxes. I had visited this place the night before and saw a cute fox all snuggled up in a perfect circle, the evening light was perfect and the fox seemed to be asleep. After some desperate tries getting close to her she saw me and sadly disappeared. So as I said I was hoping to see her again the next morning. This time the luck was on my side. I can't be sure if it was the same fox but in that same exact place there was a young fox lurking in the tall grass. I was on an open ground and didn't have anywhere to hide to but one juniper tree some 5 meters from me. So I immediately hunched down and hid myself behind the bush and I stood up. The juniper was a little bit taller than me and it had two branches at the top. I wish that the fox had a camera as well because I think I might have been quite funny - just my head and my camouflaged camera visible through the bush :D. I think the fox thought I was funny or maybe she figured I could be eatable since at one point she saw me and turned to inspect this little closer. The next few seconds happened so quickly that I didn't have the time to change some settings on my camera so I do apologise for some pics that are blurry. Thankfully the closest pic of her is sharp :D She only stood a few meters from me and stared at the bush. I was laughing inside because she looked so funny staring at that strange bush :) So there we stood for 2 seconds, suddenly she made a big jump to the left and stood still again. She could see me clearly now since the bush was not in the way anymore. It felt like this was the first time she had ever seen a human being before, she was so curious and didn't want to leave for some time :) but I guess the insticts kicked in at some point and she ran to the woods. With a BIG smile on my face I stood there mezmerized by what had just happened and continued my trip to the sea which was some 30 meters away. Guess what, there was another fox eating sea wrack. I think it's a he because I have seen him before and his right eye is badly scarred. Enjoy the pics!!!

Only sunshine

Yes, we have seen nothing but the sun for already 4 days in a row now! :) I don't remember the last time this happened... Spring is finally here! There is still a bit snow and it's not so warm yet, about zero, but today I noticed that there are buds on the chestnut tree next to our home.

Last Sunday me and my hubby went for a drive on the eastern side of Tallinn and ended some 60 km from it. There are beautiful little fishing villages with pine trees and so many new people have built houses and moved in since our last visit. I like that the new trend seems to be to build a farm house type building. We have always had log houses with reed roofs in Estonia but there was a period where farm houses were out. Now people are building them again.


I knew that on a sunny day like this there would be lots of buzzards flying about looking for food. I was right. I think we saw totally 7 buzzards. Sadly though they were too clever for me as I tried to crawl and hide and take pictures. Of course it was quite impossible to walk quietly because all the fields were covered with snow that had a thick layer of ice on top and every time you stepped there was a loud noise... :S


So when the buzzards flew away I took some nature shots instead :P


When we came back I saw 4 foxes on different fields, too far away to start stalking. Also 5 roe deer. 4 of them were just 2 meters from a big road! That's bad that they don't fear the traffic at all. But I have trained my hubby well :) :P He immediately stopped the car when I pointed out the deer next to the road. He didn't know that I had already packed all of my gear away in my camera bag. I wasn't sad though because I got to see the roe deer from very close again and after we stopped the car there were others behind us, all admiring the animals and thankfully this frightened them by sending them off to the forest. I think we just might have saved 4 animal's lives!!!
